Eircom under 21 League
Kerry 1-0 Mervue United
Kerry, who were playing their first season in the Eircom under 21 League, qualified for the semi final against a physically stronger Mervue United. A large crowd turned up for the game that was played on a bitingly cold day with a strong wind blowing down the pitch. Under the guidance of manager Tom McGiff, the Kerry side were full of confidence and produced a very good team performance to prove that the standard of the game in Kerry was very high. The Kerry defence, with Shane Guthrie and Maurice O’Rahilly outstanding, were pinned back early in the game and had to work hard and were thankful when Guthrie headed the ball off the line when keeper David Hennessy was beaten. With Stephen O’Mahony and David Conway dominating midfield Kerry took control of the game and got the deserved winner that took them into the semi final.
Kerry: David Hennessy, Timmy Lynch, Shane Guthrie, Maurice O’Rahilly, Kieran O’Sullivan, Stephen O’Mahony, David Conway, James Sugrue, Chris Kerins, Jason Fitzgerald, Eoin O’Mahony.
Reserves: Brian O’Reilly, Eoin Colgan, Peter McCarthy.
