FAI Junior Cup 2013/14 , Tralee Dynamos v Broadford United
By Tommy Naughton
Former League of Ireland ‘A’ Division side Tralee Dynamos advanced to the fourth round of the FAI Junior cup after a home victory against Broadford United from the Desmond league on a cold wet Sunday in Tralee. Although the visitors were missing a number of regulars due to GAA commitments’ they gave the home side plenty to worry about in a tough game.
Dynamos took a very early lead when after only a minute Danny Roche scored. Theo Diggins played the ball down the right wing where Roche took on the full back before crossing high into the box. The ball deceived everyone and found its way into the far top corner to give the home side the perfect start.
Soon after, Broadford’s Diarmuid Buckley nearly got Alan Fitzpatrick through only for Chris Hegarty to come out of his goal quickly to clear the danger.
With 15 minutes gone Hegarty had to leave his area again as a ball over the top saw a race between the keeper and Liam O’Shaughnessy. The ball cannoned of both players and rolled to Marty Foley but Hegarty reacted quickly to get a tackle in to keep his side ahead.
Jonathan Hannafin and James Sugrue combined well before setting James Wall up but his snap shot went harmlessly wide. On the half our mark Dynamos nearly doubled their lead. James Wall sent in a deep cross and Shane Carey slid in at the far post only to see his shot hit the side netting.
A minute later however Carey did get his goal. James Wall found Danny Roche in space, he cut inside from the right wing and his low cross was parried out by the Broadford keeper and Carey was quickest to react and made no mistake from close rang.
Broadford kept to their game plan of being very direct but this was giving up huge amounts of possession to the home side. They did pull a goal back late in the first half when Fitzpatrick dispossessed Burrows who was the last defender. Fitzpatrick squared the ball to O’Shaughnessy and he made no mistake with a clinical finish. Eoin Cassidy had the last chance of the half but under pressure he headed wide from a Theo Digging’s cross.
The second half was full of action with the game swinging from end to end. Broadford had the first chance when they broke quickly but O’Shaughnessy shot wide from a good position. On the hour mark Eoin Cassidy nearly extended the lead for the home side when from a James Sugrue cross he rose highest to head powerfully towards the goal. However Patrick Stack managed to get a hand to the ball and tip it onto the crossbar and Broadford quickly broke downfield where Jason Sheehan saw his shot deflected out for a corner.
From the resulting corner Joe McAuliffe’s header beat the keeper but was cleared on the line by Diggins. With twenty minutes remaining Broadford were throwing more and more forward and were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. O’Shaughnessy took the free and saw it curl over the wall but Hegarty dived to his right to palm the ball down and Guthrie cleared quickly before any off the Broadford players could react.
Minutes later Dynamos extended their lead. James Wall picked the ball up midway inside the opposition’s half and played the ball wide for Aaron Houlihan who ran at the defence before pulling the ball back inside the area to the onrushing Wall who miss hit his first effort but the ball broke nicely to him and he calmly rolled the ball in to the corner to make it three one.
Within 30 seconds Broadford had again narrowed the lead when McAuliffe played in O’Shaughnessy and this time he made no mistake driving the ball low with got under the keepers body to find the net.
Broadford now had nothing to lose and in the dying minutes the were awarded a free inside their own half. Donacha McCarthy delivered the long ball into the Dynamos box where McAuliffe won the knock down but Hegarty was alive to the danger and tipped the ball around the post for a corner.
From the Corner Guthrie headed clear to Danny Roche who broke down field. Roche beat two defenders but couldn’t get past stack in the goals and the ball rolled harmlessly out for a corner which saw the end of an entertaining game.
Dynamos will now wait for the fourth round draw knowing one more win will see them into the open draw .
