Mastergeeha 4-1 St Brendans Park
By Tommy Naughton
Mastergeeha Fc completed the league and cup double on Sunday when they won the Dominos Pizza U17 Cup after they defeated St Brendans Park in the final. Thee main reason for this victory was Mastergeeha ability to create and take their chances .
The game was barely a minute old when Sean Twomey found himself through on goal but his well struck effort was saved by the Park keeper Patrick Kearney. Mastergeeha started the more composed of the two sides and nearly went ahead after ten minutes when Patrick Warren flicked a Gearoid Kerins free kick goal wards but was somehow touched around the post by Patrick Kearney. Mid way through the first half the Park began to settle and had a great chance from a Donagh O’Brien corner which saw Segun Duyile out jump Jerry Cronin in the Mastergeeha goal but saw his header just go over the bar. The deadlock was finally broken on the half hour mark when Luke Murphy headed home a Padraig O’Connor corner at the back post to put Mastergeeha ahead. This lead was maintained to the half time break thanks to Jerry Cronin in the Mastergeeha goal who pulled off a fantastic save in the dying minutes of the first half . Sean Tansley play a defence splitting pass into the path of Donagh O’Brien whose shot looked destined for the bottom corner until Jerry Cronin got the smallest of touches with his outstretched leg to touch the ball around the far post.
Within two minutes of the restart Mastergeeha doubled their lead when Brian Friel beats two players on the left wing before playing the ball into the path of Patrick Warren who made no mistake from a tight angle rolling the ball into the far corner. The Parks response was excellent and three minutes later they pulled a goal back when a Nathan O’Leary free wasn’t cleared correctly and Sean Tansley reacted quickest to fire the ball into the back of the net from just inside the penalty area. From here on the Park pored more and more men forward and while dominating possession they never created any clear cut chances while Mastergeeha to try hit them on the break . Mastergeeha could have extended their lead on to occasions but were denied by the post on both occasions but they final did get a third with nine minutes remaining . Sean Twomey showed great composer on the left wing before crossing to Patrick Warren who again hit the far post but this time it was the inside as the ball found the back of the net. Their was still time for Warren to complete his hat trick a minute later to seal the win when he rounded the last defender and keeper to score .
