Killarney Celtic B 4-1 Castlemaine United

By Tommy Naughton

Killarney Celtic B team claimed the Dominos Pizza Reserve Cup with a win over Castlemaine United in Mounthawk Park . In truth Killarney Celtic were the better team on the night mainly due to the outstanding movement from young Stephen McCarthy up front.

After a very tight opening ten minutes Killarney Celtic were first to strike when Vladimir Sirotak showed all his experience when he played Stephen McCarthy through on goal with a defence splitting pass. McCarthy showed great composer to round the advancing keeper to score and give Killarney Celtic the lead. Castlemaine United first chance came in the fifteen minute when Padraig O’Brien squared the ball to Cathal Moriarty whose through ball was just out of reach of Mark Wren and Roy Kelliher in the Killarney Celtic goal was out quickly to gather. Minutes later and Killarney Celtic doubled their lead with a superbly worked goal involving four players all with one touch passing. Stephen McCarthy received the ball just inside the Castlemaine United half before passing to Cathal O’Shea who picked out Vladimir Sirotak midway inside the half and again he played the perfect pass to Stephen McCarthy who had beaten the offside trap and his finish was clinical into the far bottom corner.
Castlemaine’s reaction to this was excellent and moments later they had a chance to pull a goal back when Cathal Moriarty beat two players inside the penalty area before being taken down by the third where referee Stuart Templeman correctly awarded a penalty. Cathal Moriarty stepped up and made no mistake sending his spot kick high into the roof of the net. Stephen McCarthy was causing problems for Castlemaine again straight from the restart but this time his shot was somehow saved one handed by Luke Flynn who was at full stretch to deny the striker. Just before the half time break Castlemaine taught they had got level when Cathal Moriarty headed home but was ruled out for offside and Killarney Celtic went in 2-1 up at the break.

Castlemaine United came out in the second half on the offence and had the first chance when Padraig O’Brien set up John James Griffin but his shot from out the penalty area was wide of the far post. Just after the hour mark Killarney Celtic extended their lead again when Paudie Clifford lifted the ball over the top of the Castlemaine defence where Cathal O’Shea was first to the ball before rounding the keeper and then the last defender who had tracked back before kicking into an empty net. Castlemaine were trying hard but just couldn’t seem to create any clear chances on goal with Cathal Moriarty shooting wide with a free kick . The game was over a contest with twenty minutes remaining when Cathal O’Shea got to the end line before puling the ball back towards the back post where the unmarked Stephen McCarthy made no mistake to score his third and Killarney Celtic fourth.
Neither side created any real chances in the final minutes of the game as both sides began to tire in front a large crowd who certainly got entertainment on a cold wet night.

KDL Secretary John O’Regan thank both teams for an outstanding final and also thanking Vladimir Sirotak from Killarney Celtic for his many years of service to Kerry soccer before Mary Connolly of Dominos Pizza presented the cup to Killarney Celtic B team.
