Mastergeeha Fc were crowned Denny U17 League Champions after they got the better of Fenit Samphires in the league final at Mounthawk Park . The win for Mastergeeha was built on an defensive display from a back four and keeper who were outstanding through out the game.
The game was only ten minutes old when we had the first chance of the game. Gearoid Kerins played a long ball over the top of the Fenit defence where Paul O ‘Connor won possession but was denied at the expense of a corner by Cormac O’Brien with some excellent defending. The result corner from Gearoid Kerins was headed away by Kieran Dwyer out to Patrick Warren outside the penalty area , Warren sent the ball wide to Kerins again whose cross found its way into the path of Sean Twomey who made no mistake from close range to give Mastergeeha the lead.
Fenit reacted to going behind and were nearly level minutes later when Cormac O’Brien got on the end of a Bobby O’Regan free kick but saw his header just going over the bar. Gearoid Kerins and Brian Friel both came close to extending the Mastergeeha lead midway through the half but both were denied by Brian O’Regan in the Fenit goal. Mastergeeha were now well on top and Brian O’Regan again had to be alert to stop a Gearoid Kerins free kick . Conor Lowe came of the bench for Fenit and within minutes of his introduction beat two player son the right wing before crossing to Christopher Murphy who saw his goal bound effort blocked by the sliding Padraig O’Connor to keep Mastergeeha ahead at half time.
Within minutes of the restart Padraig O’Connor crossed to Paul O’Connor whose back heal attempt was just wide of the near post. Oisin O’Brien then was awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area which he chipped over the wall and looked like it would find the top corner but for a fingertip saved from the Mastergeeha keeper Jerry Cronin. Fenit were now getting more into the game as they went in search of the equaliser. Sean Higgins saw his well struck effort saved by Jerry Cronin on the hour mark. Gearoid Kerins again was denied by Brian O’Regan when the keeper had to go full stretch to deny Mastergeeha going further ahead. Oisin O’Brien again tried his luck from a tight angle after being set up by Bobby O’Regan but again was denied by Jerry Cronin. With just eight minutes remaining the game was finally secured Christopher Murphy gets passed the last defender and with the keeper advancing out he square the ball to Paul O’Connor to roll the ball into the empty goal and seal the victory and league title for Mastergeeha Fc.
