FAI Junior Cup 1/4 Final

Saturday 11th March 2017
Killarney Celtic  2-1  Janesboro (Limerick) , AET .
Killarney Celtic became the first ever Kerry side to reach the semi final stage of the FAI Junior Cup after they defeated Limerick side Janesboro Fc in the 1/4 Final on Saturday night. In front off a crowd which was estimated to be over 1600 they showed fantastic heart and team work to come from behind and for the third round in a row finishing the game with ten men.
In truth Janesboro started the game the better creating numerous chances in the first half as Celtic seemed to give their opponents to much respect and space . Shane Clarke went close after nine minutes from a header when he found himself umnarked inside the penalty area. Minutes later as Janesboro up the tempo Wayne Sparling headed the ball clear off his own line onto the unsderside of the crossbar after Clarke got on the end of a corner from Aled Harkin. Midway through the first half Catal O’Shea seemed to be taken down in the penalty area but Celtic’s appeals were waved away by match referee Finbar Murphy. Adrian Power then had two chances in the matter of seconds when first he was denied by a sliding challange from Chris O’Leary but when the rebound fell kindly for him Roy Kelliher stood tall to deny him . Janesboro struck for the lead after 32 minutes when John Tierney fired a shot on the half volley from just outside the penalty area which just about beat Roy Kelliher thanks to the swerve and dip on the shot. Janesboro should really have doubled their lead minutes later when a quick throw found Power in behind the defence with only the keeper to beat but he decided to try lob the ball over the keeper only to miss the target at the far post. Roy Kelliher then produced a full length save to deny Tierney when he again tried his luck from long rang . The final chance of the half fell to Celtic when Peter McCarthy just failed to get a touch on to the ball from a Chris O’Leary throw and the Janesboro keeper was happy to gather the lose ball.
The second half saw a different Killarney Celtic side than the first . For the remainder of the game Celtic hasseled and harrassed every player never giving them a moments rest on the ball. Wayne Sparling went close eary on when he pounced on some defensive miscommunication only to see his effort just go over the top. On the hour mark Celtic got level when Jamie Spillane rose highest to powerfully head home a Pa McGrath coner to send the huge home support wild. From here on you could feel the momentum shift and their really was only going to be one winner. Peter McCarthy was denied by Janesboro kepper John Mulready as Celtic went in search of the lead goal. Celtic keep pushing forward and with great work in the middle of the park from Matt Keane , Pa McGrath and Padraig O’Connor they never let Janesboro get a grip on the game and in truth Janesboro never trouble the Celtic goal in the second half apart from a rare set piece from distance. With three minutes remaining of normal time Peter McCarthy was shown a straight red card and while some clubs would have dropped their heads Celtic dug deep and still looked the more dangerous side in the remaining few minutes while Janesboro looked happy for the game to go to extra time.
In the first period of extra time neither side created any real clear chances but with just five minutes remaining in the second half Celtic struck for the famous and already historic winner. After great work from Cathal O’Shea who never gave a ball away cheaply all night he some how got into to the penalty area where his shot was half blocked and fell into the path of the on rushing super sub Stephen Hayes who made no mistake in firing the ball low past the keepper to send the Celtic players , substitutes , managers , coaches and supporters wild . In the middle of the celebrations Janesboro Shane Clarke was shown his second yellow card . Janeboro final chance came with the last kick of the game when they were awarded a free on the endline but once again the man of the match Jamie Spillane was on hand to clear the danger and the final whislte went to start the long night of celebratons in Killarney .
Killarney Celtic will now face holders Sheriff from Dublin in the Semi Final in a County Kerry venue which will be decided in the coming weeks on the weekend 8th/9th April. Well done to everyone involved in the club on first reaching the semi final and secondly on their hosting of a great occasion on Saturday night.
